Your First Game of Paintball

What to wear, what to bring and what happens when you get tagged.

So you finally planned to go play paintball, But not sure what to expect?

-What to bring:

Money: paintball is a pretty expensive sport so don’t forget to bring cash to supply equipment and paint.

Equipment: Markers and safety goggles will be provided and explained how to use them.

Clothing: Long sleeves, and full trousers. A paintball on bare skin is not altogether pleasant. Try to keep it loose, without being baggy so it won’t snag on anything. Don’t bother wearing more than 2 layers, all this will do is make you heat up faster.

Footwear: Find out what kind of terrain you will be playing on. Generally a good pair of sneakers will be fine, but you might find yourself playing in mud, or over rocks. If you’ve got a pair of tramping boots or similar, then you might want to consider wearing those… If you are expecting a fast game on soft (or muddy ground) then I have heard people say that rugby or soccer boots are quite good. In general just find a good comfortable pair, that has a good grip on the bottom.

Refreshments: Take a drink! Playing in summer at least, it can get very hot out on the paintball field really fast. Even if you plan on spending all your time skulking under a bush, you might find yourself overheating. Some fields sell drinks, but you usually purchase lots of them, so it would be better off if you bring your own, to save money and time.

-Starting play When everyone has turned up, you will usually be given a briefing by one of the people that runs the paintball field. This will generally involve a basic rundown of the rules of the game, how to use your gear, and safety equipment. If you are unsure about something, now is the time to ask.

Game On: There are different modes of play, so what to expect on the field is pretty much up to what sort of game you’re playing, and how experienced the other team members or opposition are. Remember your objectives, and always have a positive attitude.

Being Tagged (hit): You will get tagged that’s guaranteed, but what do you do when you do get tagged? This is something that will probably have been explained in the briefing. Generally it involves you walking to a predetermined point called the “dead box” after you are hit.

The Marshals / Referee: All good fields provide a Marshall, or Referee. If they do not, I would recommend you seriously considering another field for your next game. A “Referee” is not only there to see that everyone is playing by the rules, but to ensure that everyone is playing safely and to provide on-site technical support. If you are hurt, or your marker isn’t working as it should, shout for a referee. They will also record game wins (usually by flag-hangs) and keep an eye on who’s doing what.

Conclusion:

So pretty much be very prepared and organized. Theses are the keys to having a great paintball experience. Paintball is a great activity, go out there give it your best and you won’t be disappointed.
